CHAPTER 16

What catastrophe will befall this time?

Last night Jareth informed me that if I wanted to visit the library today I would need to look like a Lady due to visiting royalty. The prospective warrior garb will not be enough to impress a dignitary “should I happen to meet one”. I doubt any high ranking nobility will be interested in viewing something that already exists in their country, but their visit has cancelled my morning classes. Thus, sitting on the floor in a dress may not be the most elegant of styles, but the library balcony has a limited supply of seating; especially toward the back. Searching for the forbidden book has yielded no results, but my research has expanded to encompass the mysterious T.J.

All evidence thus far suggests he is a resident of the North. A point I have already concluded. His exact occupation is unknown as many countries in the North have no ruling monarch which I first assumed him to be. T.J. believes the forbidden book to be in Demarde because the late Borgisean king claimed it was so. If that is the case, how did it come to be here?

Footsteps echo down the short aisles surrounded by books, growing closer to my location. Turning I see Alek dressed quite nicely, far more formal than his normal appearance in a handsome black fitted jacket with dark blue accents. “A dress?” he startles, used to seeing me in my warrior outfit. “And a pink one at that?”

My light pink dress fits nicely to my waist before the skirt fans out ending at my knees. Rolling my eyes in a dramatic fashion I recount the tale of the night before, somewhat nervous about his reaction to my almost tearful confession several nights ago. “You are more than welcome to join me in researching the illusive T.J. and his connection to Borgise. I was worried you didn’t receive the memo about the dress code, but am pleased that you planned ahead.”

“Actually I was thinking of breaking up the routine. Care to take a walk with me?” he asks, an imploring look in his eyes as he crouches next to me on the ground. The odd behavior puts me on edge of something being wrong. He helps me rise from my seat on the floor before I return the book. Joining him in descending the staircase and exiting the library, he directs us toward the center of the palace, passing various servants and guards performing their duty. The steps seem loud in the otherwise quiet corridor, though it may seem that way due to the lack of conversation.

“There is something I must tell you,” he begins, folding his hands behind his back, attempting to stroll at a leisurely pace. He never strolls leisurely. Opening his mouth to speak does not necessarily mean words form.

Uncomfortable with his uncertain demeanor I offer several possible answers to what he must say.

“Are you going to admit that you do in fact have a special collections
